Current Pool Problems

Our community pool, built in 1957, is rapidly deteriorating, and requires continual and costly repair. The concrete and plumbing are well past their serviceable lifespan. The following is a list of concerns to date. Let us count the ways.......

  • Concrete...the concrete has considerable factures and is in a crumbling state. A new pool floor was poured to help alleviate the situation, but has rendered the circulation system inoperable. A sump pump is used to empty the pool.
  • Fiberglassing....The pool was completely fiberglassed in 1987 at a cost of approximately $10,000 in an effort to "make" the pool "hold" water. At that time it was anticipated that the project would have a 10-year life span. With expensive fiberglass patching, it has lasted until 2003. In the summer of 2003, another problem developed that would not be solved by patching. The gel coat was flaking off, exposing the underlying fiberglass. Prior to filling the pool, the loose gel coat was chipped off. However, the exposed fiberglass and the chips that lifted during the season caused numerous scrapes to the feet and toes of the children who used the pool. As such, the fiber glassing requires annual repair.
  • Plumbing... The various inlets are no longer adjustable and some of them are clogged to the extent that hardly any flow comes out. Both the gutter drain and deck drain systems have been repaired many, many times. Plumbing is basically held together with radiator hose, pieces of plastic pipe, re-soldered joints and "miles" of duct tape.
  • The circulation pump is not dependable
  • Thousands of gallons of water are needlessly leached into the surrounding soil profile. Concerns have been expressed for the potential for this excess water to adversely impact the adjoining school structure as well as the loss of the treated water itself.
  • The water heater is not dependable
  • Pool lights are a safety hazard and have been disconnected.
